PRP for hair loss

Hair PRP , or platelet-rich plasma, is used to restore hair growth. It is injected into the scalp, it stimulates cells in the follicles to promote hair growth and give volume to existing hair.

PRP promotes and maintains natural hair growth and increasing hair thickness by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles. In some cases, PRP hair loss treatment is combined with other hair loss treatments and medications.

PRP therapy has been used since the 1980s. PRP is also used to treat problems such as repairing damaged tendons, ligaments and muscles.

Not enough research has been done to prove the effectiveness of PRP. It is also unclear for whom - and under what circumstances - the best option. But theoretically there are enough reasons to use it in hair restoration, in fact because this method is emerging and in the early stages, clinical evidence to confirm it is still weak.

Depending on the reason why the person is losing hair, it can be determined which treatment option best suits his needs. However, not all methods are useful for everyone. Because PRP-based therapies use the patient's own biomaterials, they can also effectively treat hair loss problems and some other ailments.

Recent studies have shown that injecting PRP into the scalp can treat androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness. Complex baldness problems may require up to 6 months of monthly treatment. Doing this procedure in a reputable beauty clinic and by a specialist gives good results.

How to do hair PRP

Hair loss treatment with PRP is done in three stages: in the first stage, blood is drawed from the body, then the drawed blood is prepared with a special device and in the third stage, it is injected into the scalp.

It is necessary to repeat the treatment every 4-6 months.

Your blood - usually taken from the arm - is placed in a centrifuge (a device that spins quickly to separate liquids of different densities). This method is performed in an anti-air system. Therefore, there is no possibility of air pollution.

After about ten minutes, the extracted blood in the centrifuge is divided into three layers:

  • Platelet-poor plasma
  • Platelet-rich plasma
  • Red blood cells

Platelet-rich plasma taken from the blood is injected through a syringe into the parts of the scalp that need hair growth.

Hair PRP or platelet-rich blood plasma is used to renew and strengthen weaked haird and hairs are at risk of hair loss, this way the cells are repaired in a natural way. For optimal growth, normal hair density and increased density in thinning hair areas, a combination of PRP and mesotherapy is recommended.

Before hair PRP

Before the procedure, be sure to inform your doctor about the list of all your medications, including supplements and herbs, along with the following:

• Consumption of blood thinners

• Smoking

• History of alcohol or drug use

Tell your doctor if you are undergoing treatments such as Botox for the forehead or laser facial hair removal.

Hair PRP cost

The cost of doing PRP depends on several factors. Including:

The geographical location and the place you go to for treatment

Quality and technology of the equipment used

Nutrients that are added to platelets

Many insurance plans consider hair PRP to be a cosmetic procedure and therefore do not cover the cost of treatment.

Number of hair PRP sessions

For complete treatment, at least 3 to 5 sessions are recommended for most patients. The first results are visible even after the first session. Because the concentration of stem cells is 3-8 times higher than whole blood. After the second and third sessions, the result intensifies

After the first three sessions, the hair is 60% thicker than the pre-treatment. If you are unhappy with the outcome, more meetings are possible.

Ultimately, it all depends on the severity of hair loss and the combination of other treatments. There is no limit to the number of treatments a person can perform. However, in order for your results to last longer, you need to repeat the hair PRP every year.

The right age to do hair PRP

Your suitability for PRP hair loss treatment should be evaluated by a physician. PRP treatment is independent of age and gender. Any patient suffering from hair loss can use this treatment. However, it is more common for men with severe hair loss or complete baldness to use this method.

Patients with hair loss with intact healthy follicles are usually good candidates for PRP hair loss treatment. These patients may have excessive hair loss, but they are not completely bald, so the sooner a person steps in to eliminate their hair loss, the better the results will be.

Both men and women can use this treatment. However, men suffer from baldness when they start treatment, while women consider hair loss to be an emergency and usually seek treatment immediately.

This treatment is ideal for hair loss and thinning during pregnancy, which affects 40 to 50% of women, but it is better to wait until after childbirth to do this method. Although this method uses your own blood, not enough research has been done to determine if PRP is safe during pregnancy.

The difference between hair transplantation and hair PRP

Hair transplants have become popular because of their immediate results, and PRP is a non-surgical option that requires patience. In contrast, hair PRP costs less than hair transplants. PRP is less painful than hair transplants.

PRP-stimulated hair also looks more natural.

Complications of hair PRP

The basis of PRP treatment is the extraction of blood from the individual's own body, no contagious diseases or allergic reactions are expected.

However, like other injections, PRP has side effects. Complications of PRP in the treatment of hair loss can include the following:

• Damage to blood vessels or nerves

• Infection

• Calcification at injection sites

• Scar creation

You may also react negatively to the anesthetic used to treat it. If you decide to have PRP treatment for hair loss, talk to your doctor about anesthesia or non-anesthesia.

PRP is safe for the vast majority of people, if you have any blood or platelet disorders. You should not have active or viral infections such as shingles, and you should not being treat with steroids and blood thinners such as coumadin.

Also, if you have the following, you are not suitable for PRP hair treatment:

  • Acute or chronic infections
  • Cancer
  • Chronic liver disease
  • Chronic skin disease
  • Hemodynamic instability
  • Hypofibrinogenemia
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Platelet dysfunction syndromes
  • Systemic disorder
  • Low platelet count
  • Thyroid disease
